“Statistically Significant,” the debut LP by Last Stat, resonates as a musical catalyst for change. Blending hip hop, jazz, funk into electronica glitch, Last Stat aims to build awareness on social justice issues and unite community efforts of selective nonprofits.  “Statistically Significant” serves as a compelling personal narrative aimed at illuminating a broader perspective. In collaboration with his musical hero, Myka 9 of the Freestyle Fellowship, Last Stat endeavors to shed light on the talented artists of Leimert Park, Los Angeles, the impactful Project Blowed, and the visionary leadership of Ben Caldwell at KAOS Network. This musical endeavor on the track, “Acetone,” not only showcases Last Stat’s artistic prowess but also pays homage to the vibrant community and creative forces that have shaped the cultural landscape of Leimert Park.

"Intro (to Freestyle Fellowship)" is an homage to intros of classic '90s hip-hop albums like De La Soul's "Stakes Is High." In De La's intro, listeners are asked about where they were when they first heard Boogie Down Productions' / KRS-One's "Criminal Minded" album. Here, Last • Stat shines a spotlight on the legendary group Freestyle Fellowship, featuring their groundbreaking sophomore LP, "Innercity Griots." Last • Stat points out how everything changed from the moment he first put the cassette in the deck. This is Last • Stat's ode to Freestyle Fellowship and to bring awareness to the artists of Leimert Park.

02. Acetone (featuring Myka 9)

"Acetone" draws inspiration from Peter Wohlleben's book, "The Hidden Life of Trees," and Last • Stat's extensive 21-year career in the painting industry. Myka 9, a luminary of Freestyle Fellowship and Project Blowed, took this concept and carved a lyrical path through a forest of jazzy horns, brushes on snares, and an improvised bassline. The collaboration with Myka ignited a creative journey that propelled Last • Stat to craft an entire album complementing the atmospheric essence of "Acetone."

03. Perpendicular

"Perpendicular" emerged from the spark of inspiration captured on an iPhone, swiftly evolving into a creative burst over a single weekend. Designed as part of a dynamic duo with the subsequent track, "Parallel," the concept revolves around multiple perspectives coexisting simultaneously, each distinct yet never identical. It's a collision of chaos and peacefulness, gradually building to a crescendo of horns before unleashing a barrage of drums.

04. Parallel

"Parallel" takes an intriguing departure from where "Perpendicular" concludes, navigating through glitchy, highly-distorted textures and a meticulously chopped-up drum pattern. Both tracks harmonize in C minor, providing an alternative narrative that might otherwise go unexplored. Together, "Perpendicular" and "Parallel" form an instrumental exploration into the complexities of perspective, revealing how one's viewpoint can be distorted by the glitches inherent in the journey of life.

05. Patricia Joyce to Kids in COVID

Positioned as an interlude following the epic odyssey of "Perpendicular" and "Parallel," "Patricia Joyce to Kids in COVID" serves as a grandmother's uplifting message to the children who endured months of lockdown during COVID and were now venturing back into the classroom. It stands as a poignant reminder of the mental health challenges that the youth faced during the tumultuous period of 2020-21.

This is an ode to all women—those ensuring their grandchildren's mental health receive reassured comfort, those diagnosed and enduring treatment, and those the world has lost to breast cancer. The composition, set in 7/8 time, reserves 1/8 for the women who will face a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetimes.

07. Beat for a Silent Rapper

Hip hop remains at the core of Last • Stat, yet its influence extends beyond. Employing traditional beatboxing to anchor the rhythm, the track transitions into a drum 'n bass break and coda—an homage to the legendary drummer of KUDU, The Mars Volta, and Technoself, Deantoni Parks. In this composition, the beat stands independently, absent an MC, while paying tribute to the multitude of producers and studio musicians whose contributions have enriched the world of music.

08. Subdivisions

"Subdivisions" serves as a sonic exploration of the imaginary lines humanity constructs to segregate one another. Collaborating seamlessly with "Beat for a Silent Rapper," this track unfolds with ominous keys transitioning into a bassline reminiscent of hardcore or blackcore, only to expand into a tapestry of electronica textures enveloping a funk backbeat. The abrupt conclusion of the break gives way to a drum 'n bass sequence, culminating in a choir that embraces the track. The concluding moments revisit the initial bassline and atmospheric textures, closing with a rhythmic drum sequence.

09. This USAmerican Life

"Statistically Significant" delves into controversial terrain with "This USAmerican Life," an intricate exploration of AI. Last • Stat utilizes AI to process extensive source material, including well-sourced gun violence statistics, LGBTQ+ violence data, marginalized communities' struggles, and gender inequality. The juxtaposition involves computations reflecting the concept of 'happiness' from a privileged perspective in the United States, derived from polls and sourced material. All these materials undergo a unique task—an erasure-like poem algorithm, deleting a significant portion of their findings. The voice, rooted in AI, is further manipulated to harmonize with the song. This track stands as a dedication to those without agency and a contemplation of the unbridled technological future ahead.

10. Rich's Guitars (featuring Richard Pollastro & Khushbu Srivastava)

Eight years in the making, "Rich's Guitars" is a poignant tribute from Jeff Pollastro, known as Last • Stat, to his late father, Richard M. Pollastro. Rich's profound passion for guitars and his love for crafting 1960s-style music with friends since high school laid the foundation for this emotional collaboration. The track opens with a voicemail, hinting at Rich parting with his possessions as he faces the inevitable from pancreatic cancer. The entire composition stems from a guitar riff captured on camera during Jeff's last Father's Day visit in 2014, becoming a testament to their unrealized musical collaboration. Jeff's life partner, Khushbu Srivastava, contributes a heartfelt poem on the spot, adding a luminous touch to the song midway through. The piece concludes with the full version of Richard's powerful performance, capturing the strength in his music despite his physical weakness from the illness. "Rich's Guitars" is not just a musical creation; it's a culmination of a life-long journey, a son's tribute to his father's enduring musical legacy.
